About Orca

Orca builds modern planning and navigation systems used on real boats, in real conditions. Our product spans mobile software, data, and hardware integration, and operates under challenging constraints like weather, connectivity, and safety.

Our goal is to modernize recreational boating and become the go-to solution for planning and navigation at sea. We are a small, fast-moving team that cares deeply about building high-quality software and making thoughtful technical decisions.

There is no heavy hierarchy at Orca. People take ownership, work closely across disciplines, and have real influence on both product and technical direction.

About the role

You will help build and own core parts of the Orca mobile app, from sail routing and weather overlays to real-time navigation and marine data visualization.

This is a mission-critical navigation interface used offshore, offline, and under changing conditions. Reliability, performance, and clarity are non-negotiable. The features you ship will directly shape how hundreds of thousands of boaters explore and enjoy the seas.

We often start with a real goal, such as helping users choose the best departure time, and work toward a solution through prototyping, iterations, and real-world testing. You should be comfortable driving features end to end, balancing exploration with execution in a small team.

In this role, you will

  • Build complex mobile interfaces primarily in React Native, reaching into native code when performance, reliability, or platform behavior requires it.

  • Own features end to end, from early ideas through production, collaborating closely with designers, product managers, and backend engineers along the way.

  • Proactively identify requirements, risks, and potential pitfalls in feature design.

  • Clearly communicate your ideas and decisions, and bring teammates along in your thinking.

  • Contribute to the overall app architecture and help shape how we build mobile software at Orca.

Your background looks something like

  • 5+ years of mobile development experience, including at least 3 years building production apps with React Native.

  • Strong CS fundamentals.

  • Deep understanding of TypeScript, React, and modern front-end patterns.

  • Solid experience building and maintaining native modules in Java/Kotlin and Objective-C/Swift, including Turbo and/or Nitro Modules.

  • Experience integrating complex APIs and working closely with the backend team.

  • A sharp eye for detail and strong focus on performance, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Proven ability to build high-quality solutions independently.

  • Exceptional ability to manage uncertainty, define clear requirements, and drive toward clarity through fast iterations, learning, and sharp problem framing.

As a person, you

  • Are first and foremost a builder.

  • Are a self-starter and excel when given autonomy.

  • Prefer simplicity and practicality in your engineering solutions.

  • Are detail-oriented and mindful of how changes impact the broader system.

  • Communicate clearly, seeking and providing context proactively.
