Senior Mobile Engineer, React Native

About Orca

We’re a tight-knit, fast-moving team that cares deeply about building great software products—and doing it with curiosity, creativity, and high standards. As a Senior Mobile Engineer, you’ll be in a position where your ideas, code, and leadership genuinely shape what we build and how we build it.

There’s no heavy hierarchy here. Everyone rolls up their sleeves and contributes directly to the mission. If you take initiative, follow through, and consistently raise the bar, you’ll naturally grow into more ownership and influence.

Clear, thoughtful communication is part of the job. You’ll be expected to articulate your ideas and share knowledge precisely and effectively, give and receive feedback, and help others level up along the way.

About the role

We're on the hunt for a Senior Mobile Engineer specializing in React Native who’s passionate about crafting beautiful, high-performance mobile experiences. You’ll help build key parts of the Orca app—from sail routing and weather overlays to real-time navigation and marine data visualization. This is a mission-critical navigation interface—used offshore, offline, and under stress—so reliability, performance, and clarity are paramount. The features you ship will directly shape how hundreds of thousands of boaters explore and enjoy the seas.

You're someone who thrives when navigating uncertainty and solving complex problems. We often start with a big goal—like helping users make the smartest departure decision—and work toward a solution through prototyping, research, design iterations, and real-world testing. You should enjoy this mix of creativity and execution, and have the frontend expertise to ship high-quality features quickly. We're a small, fast-moving team, so your ability to independently drive things forward is essential!

In this role, you will:

  • Build and evolve complex mobile interfaces using React Native and native components where needed.

  • Work closely with designers, product managers, and backend engineers to bring powerful navigation features to life.

  • Optimize performance across a wide range of devices and screen sizes.

  • Contribute to the overall app architecture and help define best practices in frontend development.

  • Clearly communicate your ideas and decisions, bringing your teammates along in your thinking.

  • Proactively identify requirements, risks, and potential pitfalls in feature design.

  • Take full ownership of features, from idea to production, with lots of freedom to innovate.

Your background looks something like:

  • 7+ years of mobile development experience, including at least 5 years building production React Native apps.

  • Strong CS fundamentals.

  • Deep understanding of TypeScript, React, and modern front-end patterns.

  • Solid experience building and maintaining native modules in Java and Objective-C, including Turbo and/or Nitro Modules.

  • Experience integrating complex APIs and working closely with the backend team.

  • A sharp eye for detail and passion for pixel-perfect UI.

  • Strong focus on performance, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Bonus: experience working with C++ native modules, offline-first UX, or mapping SDKs like Mapbox.

  • Proven ability to build high-quality solutions independently.

  • Exceptional ability to manage uncertainty, define clear requirements, and drive toward clarity through fast iterations, learning, and sharp problem framing.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, reporting, analytical and problem-solving skills.

As a person, you…

  • Are first and foremost a builder.

  • Are a self-starter and excel when given autonomy.

  • Prefer simplicity and practicality in your engineering solutions.

  • Are detail-oriented and mindful of how changes impact the broader system.

  • Communicate clearly, seeking and providing context proactively.

  • Think holistically about user experience and long-term product quality.
