Orca is building a modern navigation system for sailors and cruisers. We are growing quickly, have an exciting journey ahead, and are looking for a Senior React Native Developer to join our team. This position will play a crucial role in the success of Orca. 

As a Senior React Native Developer, you will have the opportunity to build state-of-the-art experiences that will delight hundreds of thousands of recreational boaters around the world.

The ideal candidate has the technical acumen to architect and build delightful experiences, communicate effectively with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders, has excellent time management abilities, and is passionate about having an impact on users. This role directly supports Orca’s mission by ensuring our customers love Orca products. To succeed at Orca, you must be energetic, highly organized, and hard-working.

What You’ll Do

The Front End Team builds the user interface and chart rendering system that runs on iOS and Android devices along with our in-house Orca Display. This team is also responsible for our serverless backend, mobile CI, and Orca’s e-commerce site.

The cross-functional nature of the team provides many different ways for you to make an impact. These will be the challenges you will frequently face:

  • Build world-class UI and UX experiences end-to-end.

  • Solve complex challenges related to the rendering of marine charts.

  • Handle WiFi and Bluetooth communication with our navigation peripherals.

  • Gracefully handle offline, online, and flaky connectivity scenarios.

  • Build mechanisms to collect behavioral data from our users.

  • Develop algorithms and functionality to assist with navigation, such as collision avoidance.

  • Empathize with, and deeply understand our end-users.

This role is a hybrid/on-premise role at our Madrid or Oslo office.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of developer experience building great consumer-facing applications.

  • You are proficient in TypeScript and React Native. Additionally, you are proficient in or interested in learning Java, Kotlin, Objective-C, or Swift.

  • Familiar with general GIS concepts, PostGIS, and Mapbox stack.

  • You uphold great engineering standards around testing, documentation, and maintainability. 

  • You can plan, architect, and build complex experiences end-to-end promptly.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, reporting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • You drive autonomy, proactivity, and ownership. You actively expand your comfort zone by exploring new or unfamiliar tasks

  • Dedicated and ethical approach.

You will be joining a small and close-knit team of industry veterans. We’ve been working in this space for years, and have several successful startups behind us. Our core experience is product development, software, and hardware engineering.
